According to Stoner, communication is the lifeblood of an organization. It represents the common aspect for the administrative processes of planning, organization, direction and control. Managers should spend many hours communicating face to face, or electronically or by phone, with employees, supervisors, vendors, or customers.
It is mentioned that communication is the process by which people try to share meanings through the transmission of symbolic messages. In communication there is a sender, a receiver and a message.
It should be noted that the difference between effective and ineffective communication can be established in the degree to which the communicating parties properly handle four aspects of the communication process: differences in perception, emotions, inconsistencies between verbal and non-verbal communication and trust or previous distrust of the parties.
Continuing with Stoner, we have that vertical communication is going up or down through the organization's chain of command. Lateral communication occurs between members of work groups, between one work group and another, between members of different departments, and between line and administrative workers. Finally, informal communication is the chain of rumors.
